Open Pedagogy – An Overview
Open pedagogy is an educational approach that emphasizes collaboration, transparency, and learner autonomy through the use of open-source textbooks and materials. What’s so innovative about this approach is that students are not just the consumer of knowledge but are also encouraged to create materials and contribute to the community.
Our Learning Experience – Reimagined.
As a SENG student, I have often turned to Youtube videos to learn math, physics, and computer science instead of solely relying on textbooks. Ideally, I would love to read textbooks if they are a little easier to understand; I know at least a few of you out there resonates with me because those Youtube videos are pretty popular ๐. As it turns out, I’ve been supporting open pedagogies all along since Youtube, Quizlet, and any online resources are part of this model. That is great, but we can take this even further.
Recall that open pedagogy also encourage students to become co-creator of learning materials. Let’s envision a learning experience where students can actively participate in revising and contributing to established textbooks, making them more relevant, engaging, and student-friendly. Think enhancing interactive quizzes, simulators, graphical illustrations – even just re-explaining concepts in simpler terms can go a long way. By incorporating student perspectives alongside expert-authored content, we can offer diverse insights and relatable material that resonates with a broader audience. Even more, we are encouraged to make these materials open-source. By doing so, we not only address the issue of outdated resources but also promote accessibility, enabling education to reach beyond traditional classrooms. Open pedagogy promotes learner autonomy, empowering us to take control of our learning journey and fostering a strong sense of ownership.
Using Open Pedagogy to Learn and Teach ChatGPT
As our group designs a teaching plan to empower students, researchers, and content creators in leveraging ChatGPT, I find that open pedagogy perfectly aligns with our goals. Since ChatGPT is an AI tool with diverse capabilities and ever-evolving functionality, it opens up a world of possibilities, encouraging exploration, discovery, and sharing of tips, tricks, and innovative applications within the community. This is where open pedagogy truly shines. With open pedagogy as our guiding principle, we can empower our learners to seize ownership of their learning journey and adapt their knowledge to their respective fields. Embracing this teaching approach also ensures that our learners remain at the forefront of this emerging technology, equipped with the necessary skills and insights to proficiently leverage the capabilities of ChatGPT within their domains.
Conclusion
Ultimately, open pedagogy revolutionizes traditional teaching models by providing free and updated resources, promoting collaboration and autonomy, facilitating authentic learning experiences, and extending education beyond physical boundaries, ensuring that education is accessible for all. With the establishment of new tools such as ChatGPT and the already increasing popularity of traditional and non-traditional open-sourced teaching platforms, open pedagogy should be the way forward as a predominant teaching model.

Hi Julia,
I think open pedagogy is an interesting method of learning. Similar to inquiry-based learning, it seems like open pedagogy is more learner based as open pedagogy and inquiry-based learning really rely on the learner to either be curious or learn autonomously. I also use many methods of open pedagogy learning but I still like going back to a textbook at the end of the day.
Thanks for sharing,
Kevin
Hi Julia! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts about Open Pedagogies! I completely agree with you that involving students in revising and contributing to established textbooks is a fantastic idea. It can make a huge difference in terms of making the material more relevant and student-friendly. Even just re-explaining concepts in more straightforward terms can go a long way toward making the material more accessible and easier to understand. While Open Pedagogies is a great way to involve students in the learning process, there are some potential drawbacks to consider. What do you think they are?
